Dhanbad, Feb. 16: The camera freezes on the dirty face of a child with bright eyes, then on a young man leaning on his scooter, an old man displaying his wares on the streets and a barber taking good care of his moustache — subjects all in a contest for shutterbugs, with street photography as theme, at the Indian School of Mines (ISM).
Snappers’ Online Photography Competition has been a weekly affair since January 23. Three editions have already been organised and the fourth one is going on. The contests are part of a set of pre-events for ISM’s annual fest — Srijan 2K13 — that is scheduled from March 14 to 16.
Speaking to The Telegraph, convenor and second year student Quintus Fernandes said for the event, they invite enthusiasts — from amateurs to professionals to the passionate photographer — to mail their best shots to snappers@srijan.org.
“After we receive the photographs, we carry out an extensive search to check if the clicks are original or not. Then we upload them on our facebook account, www.facebook.com/ism.srijan. Each week, the winner is decided depending on the number of facebook likes he/she gets,” Fernandes told The Telegraph.
For the first week, the theme was black and white. Altogether 86 entries competed for the top slot and Manish Reddy, a third year BTech student, was declared winner. He got a pen-drive, while runner-up Pranay Kumar bagged a headphone.
All prizes are sponsored by Jhajharia Computers.
The topic for the second week, which began on January 30, was nature. Out of the 50 clicks, third year student Amrit Nandan received 2,081 likes and was declared a clear winner. First year student Krati Agarwal finished second with 1001 likes.
The third week saw fewer participants. With a subject like macro photography, only 44 send in their entries. This time also, a third year student, Ravi Agarwal, emerged winner with 818 likes. His batchmate Eslawath Jyoshna followed suit.
“Though entries from outsiders are also open, so far the winners have been from the cradle,” said Fernandes.
