Chess meet from April 2

Guwahati, Feb. 15: The All Assam Chess Association is conducting an international Fide-rating chess tournament here from April 2 to 6 in a bid to provide exposure and a platform to local players.

“This is the first time we are organising a category tournament here this year. We chose not to make it an open tournament as top-rated players will have an advantage over the lower rated ones. Hence, this will be a below-2,200 Fide-rating chess tournament where local players will be able to rub shoulders with participants from other states as well those from abroad,” Biswajit Bharadwaj, the tournament’s organising committee’s publicity secretary, told reporters here today.

Three hundred players from the country and abroad will vie for top honours at the meet to be held at T Ao Indoor Stadium, Cotton College.

The association is organising the meet in association with Cotton College Union Society.

“The 10-round Swiss league tournament is being held on behalf of the All India Chess Federation will have Rs 2 lakh as prize-money. Dharmendra Kumar will be the chief arbiter of the tournament,” he said.
