Anand Jon term

New York, Feb. 15 (PTI): Indian fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander was yesterday jailed for five years for sexually abusing aspiring models after pleading guilty on one count in a Manhattan court.

The term was awarded under a plea deal reached with federal prosecutors, who dropped the entire case against him. The Kerala-born designer is already serving a 59-year sentence for sexual assaults on seven young women and minor girls.

Chautala blow

New Delhi (PTI): Om Prakash Chautala on Friday failed to get a reprieve from Delhi High Court on his plea for interim bail on health grounds. The court sought the CBI response on the former Haryana chief minister’s plea and asked jail authorities to submit his medical records.

Ramdev notice

Dehradun (PTI): Uttarakhand pollution control board has issued a showcause notice to a herbal food park run by Ramdev in Haridwar. The notice was served for allegedly releasing untreated waste into the water bodies in the area. The park has been given 15 days to respond.

False charges

New Delhi (PTI): A court has said while acquitting a man of the charges of raping his maid that the recent trend of underpaid domestic workers making false allegations of sexual abuse against their employers should be nipped in the bud.

Bhojshala

Bhopal: The Shivraj Singh Chauhan government on Friday managed to hold namaaz and Saraswati puja at the disputed 11th century Bhojshala in Dhar district but hardliners among Hindus and Muslims were dissatisfied. Police resorted to lathi-charge and lobbed tear gas shells to ensure law and order. Muslims believe Bhojshala to be a mosque while Hindus consider it an ancient temple.

Airline stick

New Delhi (PTI): A consumer forum has directed British Airways to pay Rs 2.26 lakh to a passenger as compensation for the loss of her luggage while she was travelling from Miami to Delhi.
