Jamshedpur, Feb. 15 (PTI): The services of about 75 per cent of the 5,000 temporary workers of Tata Motors here have been terminated in view of the prevailing slowdown, a Telco Workers Union (TWU) official said.
The general secretary of TWU Chandrabhan Singh said the termination was a routine process.
According to Singh, the services were terminated only in the departments which had achieved their targets.
Tata Motors corporate communication chief Debasis Ray said the workers were recruited according to the demand and were disengaged when the work was completed. “There is nothing unusual in this,” he added.
Singh assured that the temporary workers would be called back when the markets improved.
He said the company churned out only 3500 units this month because of the slump in demand compared with a general production of 10,000 units per month.
