A fair, once more

If you’ve missed visiting the recently-concluded Bidhannagar Mela, fret not. Fair weather continues and you can visit Saras Mela at Central Park this week.

The fair will bring together craftsmen from all over India. There will be bamboo furniture and decorative pieces from Tripura, handloom saris from Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala and more.

There should be more than 200 stalls, run mostly by women of self-help groups. There will be a food court run by ladies too.

In the evenings, there will be cultural programmes, mostly featuring folk art of West Bengal.

A highlight of the cultural event will be a performance by the inmates of Behrampore Central Jail. They will perform to Tota Kahini on February 22.

Saras Mela is being organised jointly by the panchayat and rural development department, government of West Bengal, and the ministry of rural development, government of India. This is the eighth annual edition of the fair.

“The speciality of this fair is that the artisans themselves come to man the stall and get to interact directly with the end users,” said joint secretary, panchayat and rural development department Paritosh Roy.

The fair will be on till February 25 and its timings are from noon to 9pm. Entry is free.
