Calcutta, Feb 15 (PTI): The Congress on Friday demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigate the killing of a police officer in Garden Reach here, a day after the state government had asked its own Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to handle the case.
Congress MP Deepa Dasmunshi said after visiting family members of the slain sub-inspector Tapas Chowdhury that a CBI probe would ensure independence of the inquiry.
“We are against a CID probe. We demand a CBI inquiry for an independent probe. All culprits should be booked immediately irrespective of their political affiliations, may be a minister or borough chairman,” she said.
She said the people who had provoked or instigated the incident should also be taken into custody.
“Their interest to shield some accused, who are yet to be arrested, should also be probed,” she observed.
Dasmunshi met the victim's wife, mother, son and family members at their Thakurpukur residence and expressed condolence.
Describing the incident as “most unfortunate”, she said, “This is an unpardonable offence and all culprits should be given exemplary punishment. Arrest of the main culprits and those responsible for instigating it should be accorded priority over transferring police officers,” Dasmunshi said.
She cautioned that transfer of the city police commissioner to protect “irresponsible political leaders including a minister” could result in revolt in the force.
The Congress MP also demanded security to the family till the inquiry was completed and all culprits were booked.
Meanwhile, the CID, the state's main investigative agency, conducted several raids since last evening to trace an accused named in the FIR Md Iqbal alias Munna, a TMC leader and borough chairman, and Mokhtar, a local goon with link to the Congress, police sources said.
Both have remained elusive.
The CID officials, however, managed to seize several documents from their residences and offices and interrogated family members, the sources said.
Yesterday, state Governor M K Narayanan had slammed a minister's alleged attempt to shield Md Iqbal, saying he had no business doing it.
“The police should act on the list of the accused in the FIR,” he observed while paying a visit to the SI's residence.
