Feb. 14: CPM MLA Abdur Rezzak Mollah today said a “civil war” would break out if Mamata Banerjee tried to win the panchayat polls with the help of anti-socials and police, the warning coming in the first political event he attended after the alleged Trinamul assault on him five weeks ago.
Addressing a CPM gathering at Bhangar, where he was allegedly attacked by a Trinamul group led by Arabul Islam, Mollah said: “Goonda, mastan, police diye panchayat joy korte chaichhe mukhyo mantri. E jeno Hitler-er rajotye bash korchhi. Gayer jor dekhate gele griho judhho lagbe, bole dilam (the chief minister is planning to win the panchayat elections using goons, toughs and the police. We seem to be living under Hitler’s regime. But I am saying, if they show muscle power, it will lead to a civil war).”
He accused Trinamul of being a “party of anti-socials and goons”. “They wanted to kill me.”
Mollah was allegedly attacked on January 6 barely 4km from today’s meeting venue. The CPM veteran remained in hospital for 20 days.
“I am back on the political stage after five weeks. I will try my best to brighten my party’s prospects in the panchayat polls,” Mollah told The Telegraph after the Bhangar meeting, which around 20,000 people attended.
The CPM MLA said he wanted to campaign for his party in the Rejinagar (Murshidabad), Englishbazar (Malda) and Nalhati (Birbhum) bypolls, which would be held on February 23.
Recounting how he was attacked, Mollah said without naming Arabul: “They (Trinamul) wanted to finish me off. But look at what has happened to that person. Shei Yudhistir ekhon jail-e (that Yudhistir is in jail now).”
Mollah criticised the chief minister’s alleged policy of minority appeasement, saying Muslims would not be fooled by her and that they have seen through her “game’’.
“Mamata is making false promises to the minority community. But you (Mamata) take it from me. You cannot fool Muslims. They are getting educatedů they have understood your game of Musalman toshon (Muslim appeasement),” he said.
The CPM leader questioned the chief minister’s assertion that she had provided jobs to the minorities and asked her to furnish facts and documents to substantiate her claim. “Mamata is only giving promises and assurances to the minorities. How many jobs have you given them? You must publish facts and documents,” he said.
Mollah had words of advice for the chief minister too. Referring to the strain that her busy schedule is causing her, the CPM MLA said: “The chief minister has enough work pressure, perhaps she’s losing self-confidence and getting angry. Bhalo kore jol khan, fol khan, bisram nin (drink lots of water, have fruits and take rest).”
Referring to the alleged attack on Mollah, leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra said at today’s meeting: “Trinamul thought they would break our spine. That they can. But they won’t be able to bend it.’’
