Cop attack charge on TMC kin

Calcutta, Feb. 14: A traffic sergeant was allegedly assaulted by the brother of a Trinamul leader in Beliaghata this evening when the cop hauled up an autorickshaw driver for illegal parking and was about to fine him.

Police raided the house of Toton Das, whose elder brother Asutosh is a Trinamul leader, in the area but the accused could not be found.

The incident happened two days after sub-inspector Tapas Chowdhury was shot dead by a goon with Trinamul connections at Garden Reach.

The trouble started after Rudranath Mukherjee, a sergeant with the Beliaghata traffic guard, saw the autorickshaw illegally parked on the busy Beliaghata Main Road at 7.45pm.

When he tried to register a case against the errant driver, residents, including Toton, gathered at the spot and started arguing in favour of the driver.

According to the FIR filed by Mukherjee, Toton punched him. As more policemen rushed in, Toton fled to his house. When the cops tried to enter the house, a group of women stopped them.

“We are looking for the accused,” said an officer of Beliaghta police station.
