A burglary in Argora and the cracking of another burglary case in Bariatu meant a day of mixed fortunes for Ranchi Police on Wednesday.
Burglars decamped with jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh and Rs 11,000 in cash from the Harmu Housing Colony home of retired joint secretary in the state social welfare department Binod Kumar Sinha.
Sinha discovered the break-in on Wednesday morning around 9am when he returned with his wife from Patna where he had gone to negotiate his US-based daughter’s marriage.
“I noticed the grill gate open as I reached home. To my shock I found all the locks of the steel almirahs open and the contents of the cupboards scattered around the four rooms of the house,” Sinha said.
His wife Shobha said the break-in happened after their landlord Awadh Kumar Pandey, who lives on the same premises, left for Amrtisar on Tuesday afternoon.
“When I left for Patna on February 9 Pandey was here. However, on Tuesday afternoon he left for Amritsar, leaving the key with one of the neighours. That neighbour left the house unattended through the night and the burglars got the opportunity to get in,” she said.
Sinha’s house is barely 200m from the Jharkhand Home Guard district headquarters and police outpost.
Officer-in-charge of Argora police station Pradeep Kumar Das confirmed the theft and said a detailed probe has started. A case of burglary was registered at Argora police station based on Sinha’s statements. The ornaments stolen included 20 silver rings, eight silver bracelets, four silver bangles besides four gold earrings and two gold nose rings. Two cameras and a mobile phone were also taken away.
Thefts in other houses in the locality have been reported in the past.
Meanwhile, Bariatu police solved a burglary case that was reported on the eve of Republic Day by arresting two and recovering Rs 15 lakh from their possession.
“The burglars, who had decamped with Rs 20 lakh in cash from the Morabadi residence of brick kiln owner Adhir Kumar Singh on January 25, were arrested from Chatra. They were identified as Pappu Singh, a munshi and Talkeshwar Rajak, an educated farmer. Approximately Rs 15 lakh was recovered from their possession,” senior superintendent of police Saket Kumar Singh said.
