Kaput pump shakes college

Siliguri, Feb. 12: Panic spread among 500-odd students and staff at the science block of Siliguri College this afternoon when the four-storied building started vibrating.

The cause of the vibration was later attributed to the malfunctioning of a pump that supplies two lakh gallons of water to a nearby overhead reservoir of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

“We were having our practical classes in the physics laboratory. Around 2pm, the instruments started shaking. We felt a slight vibration and panicked, perceiving it to be an earthquake. Within minutes, most of us were out of the building,” said a student.

SMC engineers who visited the college said the vibration was caused by air that got locked in the pump obstructing the flow of water. “When the air obstructed the flow of water, it created pressure on the pipe which started shaking. This caused the vibration in surrounding areas,” said an engineer.
