Nominee pay rule

Madurai, Feb. 12 (PTI): A Madras High Court bench today ruled that when a person has been nominated to receive the amount in a fixed deposit in the event of the depositor’s death, then the money should be given to the nominee only.

The court said the payment would not stand in the way of other legal representatives claiming their share. It directed a co-operative bank to pay Rs 8.5 lakh to petitioner M. Rajeswari as her husband had nominated her.

IFS plea

New Delhi (PTI): The Delhi University has been directed by Delhi High Court to examine the plea of an IFS officer seeking a “special chance” to complete his LLB course, which he discontinued after being selected for the services. The officer is an under secretary in the foreign ministry.

Cauvery yatra

Bangalore (PTI): Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda on Tuesday undertook a padayatra in the city demanding drinking water for the metropolis, which depends on Cauvery river. Hundreds of women joined the march with empty buckets.

Telecom stick

New Delhi (PTI): MTNL has been directed by a consumer forum to pay Rs 15,000 to an advocate whose application for shifting his landline phones was “arbitrarily” rejected by the service provider because of non-availability of cable. The forum said cancellation of the application was “without justification”.

Storm damage

Nashik (PTI): Heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm lashed Nashik and its adjoining areas on Monday, damaging grape and onion crops. Revenue officials are assessing the damage caused by the hailstorm. Another Maharashtra district Jalgaon has also received heavy rainfall.

Child in drain

New Delhi (PTI): A man has been arrested for kidnapping his 18-month-old nephew and dumping him in a drain to take revenge on his sister-in-law. Mohammad Abid wanted to settle scores with his brother’s wife who had complained about him to police days before the January 23 incident. The child’s body has not been found.

Indians freed

New Delhi, Feb. 12 (PTI): Seventeen Indians, who were on death row in the UAE for murdering a Pakistani national and later freed by a Sharjah court on furnishing blood money, arrived at the Delhi international airport today.

They were convicted of killing Misri Khan in a bootlegging brawl in January 2009. Their relatives paid blood money amounting to over Rs 5.5 crore, which was paid to Khan’s family.

SC on Zee

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has asked Congress MP Naveen Jindal and the Centre to respond to a plea by Zee Television seeking quashing of three FIRs, including the alleged extortion case, against the group and its editors.

MiG-27 crash

Jaipur, Feb. 12 (PTI): A MiG-27 aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed within two minutes of taking off in Rajasthan’s Barmer, but the pilot bailed out safely.

The aircraft was on a routine training sortie when it crashed near Allawani Ki Dhani in the western sector, defence spokesman S.D.Goswamy said. The MiG-27 took off at 3.55 pm and crashed at 3.57 pm, he said adding the pilot ejected safely. An inquiry has been ordered into the crash, the spokesman said.

Two missing

Dubai (PTI): Two Indians have been missing in Saudi Arabia under mysterious conditions, a report said. Tanaz Shaikh, 23, a nurse disappeared after she had a surgery several months ago. Kuttappan Pillai went missing since last April.

Jilted lovers

Nagpur (PTI): A woman filed a complaint of rape and cheating against an army jawan and his family after they failed to turn up for the wedding, police said on Tuesday. Vijay Madan Pillay, 30, was to marry the 29-year-old woman, who is pregnant. The Pillays had lodged a complaint two days ago that the woman was married and that they were cheated.

Sanjay Dutt

Mumbai (PTI): A court has summoned actor Sanjay Dutt on March 1 in a criminal case filed by producer Shakeel Noorani who has alleged he got threat calls at Dutt’s behest. The actor’s lawyer denied the threats.

Indian flees

Islamabad (PTI): An Indian fisherman has escaped from a jail in Karachi, according to media reports on Tuesday. The fisherman, identified by the media only as Kishore, escaped while cleaning the main gate of the jail. Kishore was arrested by maritime authorities for allegedly entering Pakistan’s exclusive economic zone.

Flights late

New Delhi (PTI): Over a dozen flights were delayed at the Delhi international airport on Tuesday morning because of dense fog. Airport sources said the fog became dense at 6am and visibility dropped to less than 100m at the new runway around 8am delaying 15 flights.

Kumbh chopper

Allahabad, Feb. 12 (PTI): Police have registered a case against a foreign photographer and a helicopter company for taking photographs from a chopper which flew dangerously close to the people at the Maha Kumbh Mela on Sunday.

The chopper flew at a low altitude causing panic among devotees who had turned out in large numbers at the Sangam for a dip on Mauni Amavasya. The chopper was sent back after a warning by the air force authorities, the police said.

Doctor jailed

Kota (PTI): A special Kota court has sentenced a doctor to two years in jail for violating the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act by advising a woman to undergo a sex-determination test. A case was filed against Sulochana Sharma in 2006.

Black buck

Berhampur (PTI): A black buck was killed on Monday after being hit by a motorcycle at Aska forest range in Odisha’s Ganjam, forest officials said. Two persons on the motorbike were injured.
