Light relief for four-lane link

Commuters can soon look forward to streetlights on Adityapur-Kandra road, which will make the four-laned link less accident prone.

Jharkhand Accelerated Road Development Company Limited (JARDCL), the company that has constructed the four-lane stretch, tested the lights on Monday night.

“We tested the lights that have been installed recently along the stretch on Monday night,” said Alok Mani, senior manager of JARDCL, which is a subsidiary of construction major Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services.

According to sources in the company, six exclusive transformers are being installed along the 15km-long stretch. The sources added that now the nitty-gritty of the lighting system was being looked into. As soon as the company got the power connection, the lights would come on the same day. Mani said the JSEB authorities have decided to provide an exclusive power line to the Adityapur-Kandra four lane.

“For this the power board is installing six transformers along the road. The idea behind providing an exclusive power line is to keep the street lamps on even when power trips in other JSEB-command areas in Adityapur,” said Mani.

General manager of JSEB’s Singhbhum area O.P. Ambast said JARDCL’s application for power connection for the Adityapur-Kandra four lane was being processed.

“As it is a special connection, it is taking a little time. We expect the connection to be provided by next week,” said Ambast.

In all, 176 lampposts have been put up. Each lamppost will be fixed with a special timer so that the lights switch on automatically as soon as darkness descends and switch off at daybreak.

A stretch of two kilometres between Beco More and the toll-bridge crossing will be without lampposts. Two high-mast lamps will be set up in between the stretch.

Notably, in the absence of streetlights, the four-lane road had become extremely accident-prone at night. The worst affected were small vehicles and cyclists with heavy vehicles plying at breakneck speed on the smooth wide road.

Last month, three of the four fatal mishaps on Adityapur-Kandra four lane took place at night.
