Sourav petition
The high court on Tuesday admitted a petition by Sourav Ganguly, challenging a notification by the service tax authorities asking him to clear his tax dues of more than Rs 3 crore. Justice Tapen Sen, who scheduled the hearing after five weeks, restrained the tax authorities from taking any “coercive measures” against the cricketer within three months. “The service tax authorities will file an affidavit stating its stand on the petitioner’s contention in two weeks. The petitioner will file his reply after two weeks. The case will come up for hearing after five weeks,” Justice Sen said.
Body found
The body of a 28-year-old woman was dug up from under her house in Sonarpur on Tuesday. Molly Sardar was allegedly murdered and buried by her husband Sibram on Sunday. An affair of her husband might have triggered a feud between them, which led to the murder, the police said.
Fire in bank
A fire broke out at the Bank of Baroda branch in the Howrah Municipal Corporation annexe building around 3pm on Tuesday. Two fire tenders doused the flames within an hour. |
