A building materials supplier died after being shot from a close range in Colootola in central Calcutta on Sunday night.
Md Hasim, 32, was walking down Rabindra Sarani to his Gobinda Dhar Lane home when he was attacked around 11.50pm. The bullet, fired from his back, pierced his kidney. He died at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Monday morning.
Police said Hasim in his dying statement had named a youth as his murderer. The accused, a Rajabazar resident, is absconding. Last October, Hasim, who had cases of criminal intimidation pending against him, had helped a trader resist an extortion bid by the youth, said a cop.
Hasim’s friends claimed he used to work for the Trinamul Congress and someone had called him over to Mayur cinema, where he was shot. Though bleeding profusely, he managed to call his wife and friends, who took him to hospital.
“We are looking for the prime accused. Two persons who work with him have been detained,” said joint commissioner (crime) P.K. Ghosh. The accused, cops said, has charges of extortion against him.
