The Cong countdown
The Congress Bhawan in Agartala has a word painted on its front wall — “countdown” — signifying the last days of the Left Front government. The date is changed every morning. Tripura NSUI president Vicky Prasad said the “countdown” was for the government to exit from power in a few days. He attributed his optimism to the “spontaneous support” of the people.
King’s men
Bengal’s leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra and Left Front chairman Biman Bose have drawn huge crowds in Tripura. The Congress’s visiting leaders, like Assam transport minister Chandan Brahma, however, are banking on the king to bring out the people to their rallies. Having neither the language nor the personality to be a traffic-stopper, they all appear dependent on the young royal, despite the fact that the party chose to deny him a ticket.
Critical mix-up
Chief electoral officer Ashutosh Jindal made the cardinal mistake of jumbling grade I and II officers with grade III. The result was disastrous, as a large number of IAS, IPS and Tripura Civil Service officers discovered that they would have to work under officers of lower rank. They refused to take up duty and informed Jindal, who is now revising the list in conformity with the protocol.
