JNU film scrapped

New Delhi, Feb. 10 (PTI):A biopic on a slain JNU leader has been scrapped after the film’s makers and some students of the university failed to reach a consensus.

Director Ajay Kanchan said the planned film, titled Chandu, was about Chandrashekhar Prasad, who was shot dead in 1997 while addressing a gathering in Bihar. He added the movie was not a commercial venture.

Drug haul

Hyderabad (PTI): Customs officials seized five kilograms of ketamine from a passenger of a Kuala Lumpur-bound flight at the Hyderabad international airport. Abdul Rashid from Chennai had concealed the narcotic, worth Rs 2 crore, in an exercise machine and was smuggling it to Kuala Lumpur when he was nabbed, a senior customs official said.

Police rapped

New Delhi (PTI): A court has pulled up Delhi Police for their “casual attitude” in probing sexual offence cases, saying probe agencies should be more sensitive while dealing with victims so they could “fearlessly report” such matters.

Undertrial cases

New Delhi, Feb. 10 (PTI): The Centre has directed states and union territories to review cases of undertrials lodged in jails for longer duration saying only the poor continues to be in prisons without availing bail.

The home ministry said under Section 436A of CrPC, an undertrial prisoner completing half of the maximum period of imprisonment should be released on his personal bond with or without sureties, with the exception of those involved in heinous crimes.

New satellite

New Delhi (PTI): Indo-French space co-operation is set to launch a satellite to study changes in the environment after the visit of French President Francois Hollande in Delhi next week. The SARAL-Altika satellite will complement the observations of the seas made by current satellites.

Illegal entry

Rajahmundry (PTI): A case has been registered against Andhra Pradesh CPI secretary K. Narayana for allegedly entering illegally into a thermal power plant site in Andhra Pradesh’s east Godavari district and damaging the equipment there, police said.

Rape charge

New Delhi (PTI): A youth, who was in a live-in relationship with his childhood friend for over five years on the promise of marriage, has been charged with raping her. Rohan had been living together with the girl in a Delhi flat since 2007. But he allegedly refused to marry her as his parents were against their relationship.
