Sonia’s Tripura visit off

Agartala, Feb. 9: AICC president Sonia Gandhi’s campaign visit to Tripura tomorrow has been cancelled reportedly in light of the heightened security concerns following the execution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru this morning.

AICC general secretary Luizinho Faleiro, however, said Sonia had cancelled her visit because of illness and added that AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi would address four rallies on Monday.

Disclosing this, official sources said Sonia was scheduled to address two poll rallies — one at Kumarghat in Unakoti district and the other here.

“According to the programme we received, Sonia was to fly to Kumarghat by chopper and then to return to Agartala’s Astabol ground for addressing her second poll rally,” a sources said. The team of SPG officers had also arrived here on Thursday to review the security scenario and the grounds where Sonia was to address the rallies.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had earlier cancelled today’s visit to the state citing official engagements.

Neither PCC president Sudip Roy Barman nor leader of the opposition Ratanlal Nathcould be contacted.
