Guwahati, Feb. 8: Stepping up the ante against bogus financial companies in the state, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) general secretary Akhil Gogoi today accused police of patronising these companies.
Gogoi today alleged that despite cases being registered against so many such companies, a section of senior police officers is protecting the officials and representatives of these firms instead of taking action against them.
The KMSS leader said in case of one such Calcutta-based company that was collecting public deposits totalling crores of rupees from Assam without having the mandatory permission from the Reserve Bank of India, Assam police gave protection to the chairman-cum-managing director of the company.
Gogoi said an inspector-general of Assam police had written to all district SPs, including the senior SP of the city police, to give protection to the CMD of the company. “In his letter, the IGP mentioned that the SPs need to take action ‘so that helpless/innocent investors’ interest is not jeopardised/adversely affected,’” Gogoi said.
The leader said more than 100 such companies are operating in the state and have collected crores of rupees from the people of the state by promising them handsome returns despite not having the RBI’s permissionto take public deposits.
In a related development, the Bureau of Investigation (Economic Offences) of the Assam police today seized two vehicles — a Toyota Innova and a Maruti Wagon R — from the rented apartment of Arju Acharjee, one of the directors of Jeevan Suraksha Group, at Beltola in the city.
Archarjee, along with two other directors of the Jeevan Suraksha, Ashok Chakra-borty and Chandan Das, are absconding in connection with BI (EO) case number 17/2012 and 18/2012.
Another director of the company, Uttam Archarjee, had been arrested in this case.
A few days ago, the bureau had issued a “look out circular” against the absconding trio. There was allegation against the firm that it had collected public deposits from people across Assam without having the RBI’s permission.
