Death row for killing 7-yr-old

A 32-year-old Bokaro contractor, who had raped and strangulated a seven-year-old peasant girl more than a year ago, was awarded capital punishment on Friday.

District judge Gautam Kumar Chowdhry, who had pronounced Balidih resident Raju Singh guilty under sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and 201 (tampering of evidence) of the IPC a couple of days ago, put him on the death row for murder.

Singh has also been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years for rape and another seven years in jail for hiding the body of his victim. A fine of Rs 5,000 has also been slapped on him for the sexual assault on a minor. The youth has been sent to Chas jail.

On December 17, 2011, Singh had gagged and raped the child in a field after she turned down his offer of sweets. Later, he strangled her to death when she tried to raise an alarm. He hid the body in a bush and escaped.

The victimís father, a poor farm labourer, lodged a case with Balidih police. Singh, who was spotted near a field by some villagers after the crime took place, was arrested, but released on bail. He was back behind bars again after being pronounced guilty of rape and murder.
