Poura Bhavan, Okakura Bhavan architect no more

Renowned architect Kumar Kanti Majumdar, a resident of CB Block, passed away on January 29. He was 64 and was suffering from oesophagal cancer. He is survived by his wife Ruma.

Majumdar’s firm Habicon India designed many buildings in and around Salt Lake like Rabindra Okakura Bhavan, Poura Bhavan and Charnock City.

Recalling his association with Majumdar, former Bangla Akademi secretary Sanat Chattopadhyay, a resident of AD Block, said: “For Okakura Bhavan, I had wanted a melange of Indian and Japanese temple styles. Belur Math was the example I gave him. That is how he planned the facade,” he said. Majumdar was also a singer and a painter. “He was supposed to sing with the students of my wife’s music institution at a show on December 15 but was too ill.”

His last rites will take place on February 10. A memorial meet will be held on February 23 in the evening at the CB Block community hall.
