Vandalism follows Adhir call

- Furniture broken after Cong leader announces gherao of DM

Behrampore, Feb. 7: Congress workers today vandalised a government vehicle, threw flowerpots and broke furniture in front of the district magistrateís bungalow and the circuit house in Behrampore after junior railway minister Adhir Chowdhury gave a call to gherao the officialís residence.

Congress leaders, including state Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya, PCC spokesperson Abdul Mannan and Mannan Hossain, had gathered in front of district magistrate Rajeev Kumarís office, 400 metres from his bungalow, around 1pm to protest the death of a party worker a month ago allegedly because of police torture in custody.

As the DM was not in office, the Congress team submitted a memorandum demanding a judicial probe to an ADM.

Around 2.30pm, another Congress team went to Kumarís office in his bungalow to submit another memorandum. As the DM was not present in this office too, the team submitted the memorandum to the ADM.

When minister Chowdhury, who had held a rally near the DMís bungalow earlier in the day, came to know that the memorandum could not be submitted to Kumar, he asked the 3,000-odd Congress workers gathered there to gherao the bungalow if the DM did not accept the document within half an hour.

But after about 15 minutes, Chowdhury jumped off the dais and started walking towards the DMís bungalow.

Around 2,000 Congress workers reached Kumarís bungalow before Chowdhury.

The security staff locked the gate. Unable to enter the bungalow, the Congress workers broke the windshield of a government jeep and marched towards the circuit house, which shares a wall with the building.

The mob entered the circuit house compound and broke benches and chairs kept outside the building. They hurled flowerpots to the ground and broke them.

Within five minutes, Chowdhury reached the spot and pacified the mob.

Some officials sent by the DM met the Congress leaders and called them inside the bungalow.

ďI was busy. So I could not accept the memorandum initially,Ē the DM said.

Chowdhury said: ďThe DM had given us an appointment but he failed to keep it. The DM insulted the people of Murshidabad. There is a design behind this. The bureaucrats are following the diktats from Trinamul to harass the Congress.Ē
