Twenty-four students of BIT-Sindri bagged job offers from Usha Martin on Wednesday, taking the number of placements this year to 155.
The 24, who have been selected on a pay package of Rs 3.1 lakh per annum, comprise eight final-year mechanical engineering students, nine from the metallurgical engineering department, four from electrical engineering and three production engineers.
Speaking to The Telegraph, assistant professor in charge of the training and placement cell of the institute, S.C. Dutta, said 54 students appeared for the written test conducted by Usha Martin on January 22. Of them, 42 were selected for the interview for placements at the company’s units in Jamshedpur and Ranchi. On Tuesday, 25 appeared for the interview in the steel city and 24 were selected.
“The 17 remaining students will appear for interview on February 7 at Ranchi and we are expecting good results there too,” said Dutta.
He added that results of the campus selection conducted by Larsen and Toubro on January 5 was yet to be announced. Results of the pool campus selection conducted by Shobha Developers in BIT-Sindri, NIT-Patna and NIT-Adityapur to hire civil and mechanical engineering students was also awaited.
“We have around half a dozen companies coming after February 8, including Exide Battery on that day,” said Dutta, refusing to divulge the names of the other prospective recruiters.
“Given that there is an economic slowdown world over, our overall selection figures are not bad and we still have a number of recruiters lined up for visiting the campus,” said Dutta.
While 155 of 770 final-year students have landed jobs so far this year, a total of 462 out of 717 secured jobs through campus selection during the 2011-12 session. A record 526 out of 737 students were lapped during 2010-11 through campus interviews.
Of the 155 students this year, 78 have been hired by Tata Consultancy Service (TCS). The other recruiters are ACC with three students, Tata Hitachi with one, Techno India 13, Vedanta 12, Ericsson 6, Samsung India one, Hafelle India one, Ambuja Cement nine, Era India two, Joy Mining five and Usha Martin 24.
The best-performing departments have been electronics and communication engineering with 33 selections, followed by civil engineering with 24, computer science engineering with 21, mining engineering and IT with 15 students hired each, electrical engineering with 13 selections, mechanical engineering with 12, production engineering 10, metallurgical engineering nine and chemical engineering three.
“The highest pay package of Rs 6.5 lakh per annum has been provided this year by Tata Hitachi,” said Dutta, adding that the lowest was Rs 3.1 lakh offered by Usha Martin.
