Smriti takes 2-shot lead

Calcutta: Local challenger Smriti Mehra took a two-shot lead after the first round of the second leg of the Women’s Professional Golf Tour at the Tollygunge Club, here, on Tuesday.

Smriti, who topped the Order of Merit last season, hit four birdies and just one bogey in her overall total of three-under 67.

Vani Kapoor ended the day at second place, finishing at one-under 69. She got off to a shaky start, hitting a double bogey on the third hole but steadied herself to play some solid golf. She could have easily ended the day as the leader but the bogey on the 18th ruined her chances.

Smriti, on the other hand, had her only bogey on the third, but she made a solid comeback from thereon. She carded birdies at the 5th, 12th, 15th and 18th holes.

Neha Tripathi, who won the first leg, finished third with a score of par 70 while Sharmila Nicollet, the lone Indian at the Ladies European tour, finished fourth with 73. Vandana Agarwal ended the day placed fifth with 74.
