Ire at Trinamul lawyer’s Cong fight

Balurghat, Feb. 5: A section of Trinamul Congress leaders in South Dinajpur has sent a fax to the central leadership to register their protest against the party’s district vice-president and the son of another office-bearer for moving bail applications as lawyers for arrested Congress and Chhatra Parishad leaders.

Seven Congress workers, including state and district presidents of the Chattra Parishad, Rahul Roy and Saurav Prasad, were arrested on January 29 when they showed black flags at the inauguration of the Uttarbanga Utsav attended by ministers Shankar Chakraborty and Rachpal Singh.

The seven were charged under non-bailable sections and were remanded in judicial custody for eight days by a court here the next day.

Sources said 30 lawyers had moved the court seeking bail for the arrested persons and advocates included Trinamul district vice-president Biswarup Chatterjee and Subhraprakash Roy, the son of the party’s district general secretary Prabir Roy.

Party insiders said the fax to the all-India general secretary of Trinamul, Mukul Roy, alleged that Chatterjee and Prabir Roy were playing double role.

“Prabir Babu and Biswarup Chatterjee are our senior leaders. It is our unofficial policy to avoid any interaction with the rivals. We came to know that Biswarup Chatterjee and Prabir Roy’s son had signed on the bail applications. It is very unfortunate. They sent a wrong message to our cadres,” said a Trinamul leader.

Chatterjee said there was no directive from the party that he should desist from appearing for a Congress worker in court. “I have performed my duty as a lawyer. If anybody has sent a fax against me, they are free to do so. I have nothing much to say,” he added.

Prabir Roy said his son had signed on the bail applications as a lawyer. “My commitment to the party cannot be questioned on the basis of my son’s professional obligations. Some leaders sent a fax to the party leadership to corner me.”

District Trinamul president Biplab Mitra said he would look into the whole issue.
