Guwahati triumph

Guwahati, Feb. 5: Hosts Guwahati looked set to pile up a challenging first innings total as they were 217 for seven in 104.5 overs against Jorhat on the first day of their three-day JK Baruah Trophy inter-district (under-19) cricket tournament at Barsapara Stadium here today.

Guwahati elected to bat first and applied themselves to the conditions of the newly prepared wicket to be comfortably placed at close of the day’s play.

Opener Prahlad Gayan and first down Manash Das laid the foundation, sharing a 77-run second wicket partnership before Das was out for 36 (4x2).

Gayan scored a steady 68, laced with eight fours and a six facing 168 balls.

It was, however, skipper Sanzow Brahma, who stepped in at the dismissal of Das and stole the show, with a brilliant unbeaten knock of 70 (4x7) at stumps. He shared a 76-run partnership with fifth down Ranjit Changmai (25, 4x2) for the sixth wicket.

Jorhat medium pacer Sanjeev Prasad Thakur notched up three wickets for 17 runs while off spinner Raunak Bucha chipped in with two scalps for 50 runs.

The visitors will look forward to make short work of the remaining three wickets at a total somewhere below 250 in the first session and chase the total cautiously.

A first innings lead will be crucial in the match as four innings are hardly completed in three-day affairs.
