On song!

Jennifer Love Hewitt

A music career that began with Love Songs (1992) containing songs like First Taste of Love and Won’t U B Mine took a new direction with raunchy titles like Let’s Go Bang (1995) and BareNaked (2002).

Russell Crowe

Long before his debut film, Prisoners of the Sun (1990), he took on the name Russ le Roq to belt out I Want To Be Like Marlon Brando. Maximus Decimus Meridius is still pursuing a career in music with the same enthusiasm. With his friend Billy Dean Cochran he formed Roman Antix, which became 30 Odd Foot of Grunts (released three albums 末 Gaslight, 1998; Bastard Life, 2001; and Other Ways Of Speaking, 2003). In 2005, he regrouped and formed The Ordinary Fear of God, which released My Hand, My Heart (2005) and then

in 2011 he released The Crowe/Doyle Songbook Volume III with his singer-friend Alan Doyle.

Zooey Deschanel

The star of (500) Days of Summer — and the hottie from TV series New Girl — is one half of the popular rock duo She & Him. With Matthew Stephen Ward (of Monsters of Folk) she has recorded three albums 末 Volume One (2008), Volume Two (2010) and A Very She & Him Christmas (2011). Volume Three will be out this year.

Ryan Gosling

As rollicking as his acting career is his indie duo Dead Man’s Bones (with Zach Shields). Their self-titled debut album (2009) created a mesmerising atmosphere with acoustic guitars and a children’s choir. They played all the instruments on the record.

Keanu Reeves

By the time he formed the trio Dogstar (formerly Small Fecal Matter) with Robert Mailhouse and Bret Domrose, the Speed and Matrix star had starred in over a dozen movies. They opened for Bon Jovi in 1995 and appeared in two movies 末 Ellie Parker and Me and Will — besides releasing two albums, Our Little Visionary (1996) and Happy Ending (2000).

John Travolta

He has a number one album to his credit (OST of Grease, 1978) but one song does not a singer make. His songs with Olivia Newton-John (besides Grease) 末 Take A Chance (1983, OST), the songs from the album This Christmas (2012), etc. 末 are not the stuff classics are made of. Yet, albums like John Travolta Sings are a collector’s item.

Gwyneth Paltrow

The Shakespeare in Love actress doesn’t have an album to her credit but she sure can hit the high and low notes. She was nominated for an Oscar (best song) for her film Country Strong (2010) and had put in a wonderful appearance in the hit TV musical Glee. And yes, her husband is Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Clint Eastwood

On the cover of Rawhide’s Clint Eastwood Sings Cowboy Favourites (1962) appears cowboy Clint. The LP features Bouquet of Roses, Mexicali Rose and Don’t Fence Me In. In Hollywood, he has composed film scores for Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Hereafter and J Edgar and also made the biopic Bird (based on Charlie Parker’s life).

Robert Downey Jr.

Music was, in a way, a saviour for Robert Downey Jr. whose career was going nowhere till the musical The Singing Detective (2003) released. He sobered up after years of substance abuse to make a series of hit movies and a hit album, The Futurist (2004), on which he wrote eight of the tracks. The final number (Smile) was a fitting tribute to Charlie Chaplin (whom he portrayed in the 1992 film, Chaplin).

Bruce Willis

Remember Tenth Avenue Tango in the film The Whole Nine Yards (2000)? Or the harmonica section in Big Bad Cat (Rugrats Go Wild, 2003)? Just before he made an iconic character out of John McClane in Die Hard, Bruce Willis came up with The Return Of Bruno (1987), his debut album on which Booker T. Jones, Ruth Pointer and The Temptations appeared. It even peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. His other album is If It Don’t Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger (1989). That’s more like it!

Honourable mention

Eddie Murphy: He has cut a few albums, two popular titles being Comedian (1983, winner of best comedy album Grammy) and How Could It Be (1985), which featured the hit pop-funk number Party All The Time.

Jeff Bridges: The star of Crazy Heart (2009) has recorded two country albums 末 Be Here Soon (2000) and Jeff Bridges (2011).

Peter Sellers: The legendary actor had recorded many songs but one 45 rpm stands out 末 his preachy version of Beatles classics, A Hard Day’s Night and Help!.

Steven Seagal: The Aikido expert has given us two albums — Songs From the Crystal Cave (2004-05) and Mojo Priest (2006).

Kevin Costner: Kevin Costner & Modern West have released four albums, but the memorable ones are Untold Truths (2008) and Famous for Killing Each Other (2012).
