Crore robbed

Three armed men allegedly robbed a 32-year-old tax consultant of Rs 1.2 crore in a taxi on Monday night. Police said Bikash Hetampuriya, who works at a private firm on Metcalfe Street in central Calcutta, was heading home in the taxi when the trio forcibly entered the vehicle near Victoria Memorial around 8.30pm. According to the complaint, the trio snatched a bag containing the money and threw Hetampuriya off the taxi in front of Prinsep Ghat around 9.15pm.

Arrested

Abdul Rashid Khan, a typist who works from a stall in front of the civic headquarters in central Calcutta, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly typing fake court orders asking the chief municipal health officer to issue birth certificates.

Pension probe

The high court on Tuesday directed police to probe the complaint of misappropriation of widow pension funds by councillors of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. The police will have to file a report to the court after the investigation. The court will take action on the basis of the report,” the division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi ruled. he civic body allots Rs 2.20 crore a year to pay pension to aged widows in the city. Each of the 4,603 enlisted aged widows gets Rs 400 a month. The bench issued the probe order following a petition by Santbaksh Singh, a resident of ward 6, submitting that pension was being issued in the names of fictitious persons. The petition accused the Congress councillor of ward 6, Suman Singh, of including fictitious names in the list of beneficiaries.

Beaten up

A Class VI student of an English-medium school in Thakurpukur was allegedly beaten up on Tuesday afternoon by the guardian of a classmate with whom he had a squabble over a key chain. A police complaint has been lodged.

Lynched

Residents of Sribas Porel Lane in Howrah allegedly beat a youth to death for killing another youth on Tuesday.
