Four youths beat up a man at Madhyamgram when he protested against them for making lewd remarks at his wife and two girls while they were returning home from a fair on Monday night.
The youths sped away on their motorcycles after assaulting the man, in his early-40s, near Madhyamgram railway station around 10.30pm. The victims lodged a complaint with Madhyamgram police station. Pranab Pal, a resident of the area, was arrested in this connection.
The site of the incident is 5km from the spot where Rajib Das was stabbed to death in 2011 when he tried to protect his sister from a group of youths near Barasat railway station.
Last week, a group of youths attacked a man near the Shondaliya railway crossing in Barasat when he tried to save his daughter from them.
On Monday night, the man was following on his bicycle the cycle van on which his wife and the two girls, their neighbours, were returning from Subhash Mela, where they had taken part in a dance programme.
As the women got off the cycle-van, four youths, apparently drunk, started passing remarks at them and even made obscene gestures.
“I protested and tried to catch one of the youths. The four pounced on me and started beating me up. My wife and the girls started shouting for help but the traders and pedestrians did not respond,” said the man. Police visited the spot on Tuesday and spoke to traders and residents.
“We could identify all the accused as they hang out in the area every day. We found out Pranab Pal’s address and picked him up from his home,” said a police officer.
The cops claimed they patrolled the area round the clock but the victims did not see any men in uniform during their 30-minute ordeal.
