A little over 24 hours after the body of a transport operator and BJP activist was discovered in Bagbera, the police on Monday cracked the murder mystery with the arrest of two persons.
The Premnath Dubey murder case was solved with the arrest of Kitadih residents Raju Rai alias Behari and Arjun Singh Sardar, both in their early thirties. A knife that was used to stab Dubey and blood-stained clothes were also recovered.
Both accused work in a Tatanagar-based hotel run by one Coolie Singh. Another accused, identified as Rajesh Patro, is absconding.
Senior superintendent of police Akhilesh Kumar Jha said Dubey knew his assailants and had been drinking with them on Saturday night. It was while they were together that a dispute arose between Dubey and the other three over a minor issue.
The altercation turned ugly and Raju and Arjun, who were inebriated, dragged Dubey to an adjoining alley and stabbed him to death. Dubey was so drunk he could not resist his killers nor could he scream for help.
Jha said Rajesh was not directly involved in the murder and but he was made accused as he was present with the assailants at the time.
According to sources, Dubey apparently tipped Rajuís glass, making the latter angry and triggering an argument. As Raju and Arjun were colleagues, they teamed up and decided to kill Dubey.
A resident of Kitadih, Dubey (52) was a transporter and also an active member of BJP. After his body was found in a pool of blood on Sunday, party workers gheraoed Bagbera police station. The police had assured the protestors that the culprits would be arrested within 24 hours.
Sources said an eyewitness saw Raju and Arjun dragging Dubey into the dark alley and tipped off the police. On the basis of the information, sub-inspector M.P. Singh of Bagbera police station picked up Coolie Singh, who revealed the whereabouts of the two assailants.
After killing Dubey, the two accused went to a vacant house in Kitadih they used often and went off to sleep. They were arrested from there.
