Calcutta University on Monday shifted BA and BSc Part I supplementary exams that were to be held at Milli Al-Ameen College on Wednesday to another venue following clashes between teachers on the campus.
“We were forced to shift the exams from Milli Al-Ameen College as the situation there is not conducive to holding an exam. The examinees might be inconvenienced by the last-minute change, but we are helpless,” said a CU official.
The 329 students at Anandamohan College and Rammohan College who were to write the exams on the Beniapukur campus will do so at Seth Surajmal Jalan College near College Square, added the official.
Three teachers of Milli Al-Ameen were suspended on Sunday after the college governing body headed by Trinamul Congress MP Sultan Ahmed found them guilty of assault and insubordination.
The teachers had allegedly exchanged blows with teacher-in-charge Shabina Nishat Omar on Thursday. Both groups have lodged police complaints against each other.
The suspended teachers — Baisakhi Banerjee, Zarina Khatun and Praveen Kaur — reiterated on Monday that they were the ones who had been assaulted. “We will start an inquiry once we get the written complaint,” said vice-chancellor Suranjan Das.
The three teachers went to the college on Monday and found a suspension notice pasted on the gate. They claimed it was illegal.
