Madan firing finger at Buddha

Calcutta, Feb. 4: Minister Madan Mitra today said Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had ordered the police firing that killed 13 Youth Congress supporters on July 21, 1993, and claimed that he would resign if proved otherwise.

“It was a planned attack on a peaceful protest…. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is responsible. If what I said is proved false, I will quit,” the transport minister said at a hearing of the Justice (retd) Susanta Chattopadhyay commission, which is probing the case.

In 1993, Mamata led a procession to Writers’ as the Youth Congress chief when the firing took place. Her government set up the probe commission on February 7 last year.

CPM leader Mohammad Salim said “the sports minister keeps saying these things sportingly, in jest perhaps”.
