Alipurduar, Feb. 3: A 25-year-old groom was arrested this afternoon after he landed up intoxicated at his wedding on Friday.
Kaji Mehbub Islam was in a relationship with the girl for three years. They were supposed to get married on Friday.
On Friday midnight, Islam came to the marriage venue at Pashchim Madarihat, 55km from here, drunk with his family and friends. He was taken to a room where he lost his balance and was not able to stand. The bride, Amina Parvin, 20, on seeing the groom’s condition refused to marry him.
The groom had taken Rs 1,35,000 as a loan from the bride’s father.
Islam was adamant on marrying Parvin and an altercation followed between the groom’s side and the bride’s family. Local people assaulted the groom and his friends.
Soon the police arrived and tried to pacify both the sides. They asked the family members of both the sides to calm down and settle the matter and left.
After the police left, the groom, his family and friends, were allegedly attacked again. Almost all the members of the groom’s side managed to escape but the groom fell into a ditch while jumping out of a window.
The marriage was called off. This afternoon, the groom’s uncle Anwar Hussain and Islam were arrested.
“This morning the father of the bride lodged an FIR. Two people have been arrested. They will be produced in the Alipurduar additional chief judicial magistrate’s court tomorrow,” said Pankaj Thapa, the officer-in-charge of Madarihat.
