A youth in his late 20s was arrested on Sunday afternoon in front of Alipore zoo on the charge of molesting the 22-year-old daughter of a retired police officer.
Police said the accused, Arjun Shaw, a driver, was arrested after the victim raised a hue and cry as soon as he pulled her hands while she was crossing the road in front of the zoo. The girl drew attention of a traffic sergeant who detained Arjun. Officers from Alipore police station rushed to the spot and arrested the accused.
Police said the incident occurred around noon when the victim had gone to the zoo with one of her friends.
“The road in front of the zoo was crowded as it was a winter holiday. The woman was standing on the pavement in front of the zoo gate, while Arjun was on the opposite side. The woman was crossing the road as soon as the vehicles stopped at the traffic signal when the youth allegedly pulled the girl by her hand,” said an officer of Alipore police station.
“The youth deliberately pushed me with his shoulder and pulled my hand while crossing the road,” the girl wrote in her police complaint.
The woman confronted Arjun. “The youth claimed that he did not deliberately touch her. But the woman was not satisfied with his explanation and approached a traffic sergeant standing nearby, who alerted us,” the officer said.
Arjun was booked under IPC Section 354, which deals with outraging a woman’s modesty. He will be produced in Alipore court on Monday.
In another incident, a 45-year-old labourer was arrested on Sunday morning on the charge of molesting a woman whom he had engaged to paint an apartment in a highrise off the Bypass.
According to officers of Garfa police station, Rafiuddin Naskar, the accused, was caught by the security guards of the building who heard the woman’s cry for help. The woman lives in Sonarpur.
