Jan. 31: Mamata Banerjee today said the Supreme Court has issued its notification for a proposed circuit bench of Calcutta High Court in Jalpaiguri but a high court official and the state law minister in Calcutta could not confirm such a development.
“Jalpaiguri circuit bench notification hoye geche. Supreme Court notification kore diyechhe, jotodur ami jani (Notification for the circuit bench in Jalpaiguri has been done. As far I know, the Supreme Court has done this notification),” she said in Siliguri today.
However, when state law minister Chandrima Bhattacharya was asked about the matter, she said: “No official communication has so far reached my department from the Supreme Court regarding setting up of a circuit bench in Jalpaiguri.”
A high court official today said Calcutta High Court had not received any order from the Supreme Court on the bench. The circuit bench in Jalpaiguri would be a temporary one as there is no building ready for it.
“The three-judge committee of Calcutta High Court had already informed the state government that until adequate facilities are provided, setting up the temporary circuit bench in Jalpaiguri was not possible. Unless Calcutta High Court gives its nod, the Supreme Court cannot ask the high court to start functioning at the temporary circuit bench at Jalpaiguri,” the court official said.
Representatives of the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench Dabi Aday O Sarbik Unnayan Samannoy Committee who have been leading a movement to establish the bench also said they had no information of any such development.“We learnt that no such notification has been issued,” said Tapan Bhattacharya, the committee’s assistant secretary.
