Cooch Behar, Jan. 30: A district administration employee was arrested last night for allegedly forging the signatures of the district magistrate, the additional district magistrate and the Cooch Behar MP to siphon off money from the MP local area development funds.
Pradip Chakrabarty, 59, an upper division clerk, was picked up from Jamaldaha near here by Mekhliganj police.
Sources said till now Rs 1.93 crore had been found to be withdrawn fraudulently.
Chakrabarty has been remanded in police custody for 14 days.
Sources said on January 11, district magistrate Mohan Gandhi filed an FIR with Kotwali police accusing Chakrabarty, a resident of Chitrakarpara, of forging his signature and defalcating cash from the local area development funds.
He was charged under Sections 420 (cheating), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 471 (using as genuine a forged document).
“He forged my signature, that of an additional district magistrate and Cooch Behar MP Tarini Roy’s to embezzle funds meant for development. We are trying to find out how much money was stolen,” Gandhi said.
A source said: “Chakrabarty used to ask local organisations to send project proposals. He forged the signature of the MP and the district magistrate and issued cheques to the party concerned.”
