Woman raped in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jan. 30: A woman was allegedly raped by two persons in a jungle at Musniang village under East Jaintia Hills district on Monday night.

Merio Phawa, 26, and his relative Leading Phawa, 18, were arrested last night for allegedly raping the 26-year-old woman.

Official sources said the duo had assaulted the woman’s husband before forcibly taking her to the jungle.

“They severely assaulted the man before dragging away his wife and raping her. She later raised an alarm and villagers came to her rescue,” the source said.

The village defence party of Musniang apprehended the duo before handing them over to police, the source said, adding that the village headman had filed an FIR.

The source said Merio and Leading had confessed before the police that they had committed the crime. Both will be produced in court tomorrow.

The medical report of the woman is still awaited pending Forensic Science Laboratory reports, the source added.
