Calcutta: Subodh Kumar’s brilliant free-kick in the 51st minute turned out to be the eventual winner for Kingfisher East Bengal as they edged past Bhowanipore Club 1-0 in a Calcutta Football League Premier Division match, at the Kalyani Stadium, on Tuesday.
Despite the win, one cannot be impressed by the red-and-gold brigade’s show.
True that most of the first XI players were rested, but still, the others were expected to run roughshod over Bhowanipore, who were without the likes of Jose Ramirez Barreto and Hudson Lima. While the former is nursing a calf-muscle injury, the latter is recovering from a hamstring pull.
Instead, Trevor James Morgan’s men dished out a lacklustre performance.
East Bengal started with two strikers — Andrew Barisic and Robin Singh — and both of them put up a flop show.
Barisic looked a bit unfit and would need some more match-time to attain fluency.
Robin, on the other hand, is simply not making use of the opportunities.
If his off-form continues, it won’t be long that he would soon find it difficult to make it to the first XI regularly.
After a dull first-half, which didn’t yield many moves, Subodh’s free-kick broke the deadlock.
The midfielder’s right-footed strike, from around 22 yards, found the back of the net to give East Bengal three points.
