Asma pregnant

Washington, Jan. 29: Asma al-Assad, the British-born wife of the Syrian President, is pregnant with her fourth child, according to a Lebanese newspaper.

The 37-year-old, considered one of the most glamorous women in the Arab world until the uprising began, has not been seen in months and rumours of a pregnancy have long swirled.

One of the more persistent rumours says she conceived in June, meaning the child would be due in March, around the two-year anniversary of the Syrian civil war which has so far taken 60,000 lives.

The report in Al Akhbar, a Lebanese paper sympathetic to Bashar al-Assad, made only a passing reference to the reported pregnancy in an article describing the regime’s confidence that it would withstand the rebel onslaught.

“On the personal level, the man seems calm and in control. His confidence level stands out. Also, there’s the news of the pregnancy of his wife Asma, which could not be dealt with as a simple personal matter between a couple,” the article reads.
