Diptayan is sole leader

Diptayan Ghosh

Calcutta: Diptayan Ghosh emerged as the sole leader with 7 points at the end of seventh round of the 24th The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship 2013, organised by Alekhine Chess Club, at Gorky Sadan on Monday.

Debankan Dhara with 6.5 points was in second spot.

The youngest girl participant, Alaktika Chatterjee, beat Sneha Saha and youngest boy participant Srijan Chatterjee earned a creditable draw against Ahana Chakraborty both from Stepping Stone School, Rishra.

Dishan Barua (6 points), son of GM Dibyendu Barua, won against Adhip Roy.

Diptayan with white opted for a King’s Indian Fianchetto variation against Kaustuv Kundu which gave him a minimal advantage. Pressing it hard throughout the middle game, he put his opponent almost in a zugzuang which netted him a full point.

In second board, Debankan Dhara (6.5) with black opted for Sicilian Dragon Variation against Saurabh Anand (5.5 pts) of Bihar and defeated him in 40 moves.
