Room captured

Balurghat, Jan 28: The RSP-run Balurghat civic body officials today sought the intervention of the South Dinajpur district magistrate and the superintendent of police after a room of the municipality was allegedly taken over by Trinamul-led INTTUC workers on Saturday.

A gang allegedly broke the locks of the room from which the municipality operates, ransacked it and left behind festoons of the chief minister and wrote INTTUC on the walls. “The gang ransacked the room and took away some documents. We had filed a police complaint on Sunday. But no one has been arrested yet,” said municipality chairperson Sucheta Biswas. “I am busy till February 3. I will look into the matter,” DM Durgadas Goswami said.

SFI leader held

Raiganj: North Dinajpur district secretary of the SFI Prasesh Sarkar was arrested on Sunday night in connection with a violent incident at Raiganj Surendranath College in 2011. Sarkar has been remanded in judicial custody for 10 days. Police said Sarkar was involved in a case in which some SFI members prevented a TMCP delegation that wanted to meet the college principal on November 30, 2011, from entering the campus. The SFI supporters had allegedly attacked policemen and damaged a government vehicle.
