Man dies as tree falls on him
A 59-year-old man died after a coconut tree fell on him while he was waiting at a bus stand in Howrah’s Andul on Monday morning. Robin Dutta, an employee of the state housing department, was taken to Howrah District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Police said the tree, which had been been hit by lightning long ago, fell while Dutta was on his way to his office in Moulali.
Track crack delays trains
A crack in a rail track near Bidhannagar Road station delayed at least five local trains on Monday morning. The crack, which officials said developed because of fluctuations in temperature, was spotted at 10.55am. It was repaired by noon.
Burglary
Burglars broke into a mobile phone shop in Narendrapur early on Monday and fled with cash and phones worth Rs 6 lakh. Owner Hassan-ur-Zaman has lodged a complaint with Sonarpur police station. No one has yet been arrested.
Arrested
Ten persons were arrested late on Sunday for allegedly injuring six policemen and damaging police jeeps in Jagaddal, on the northern fringes of the city, earlier in the day. The cops came under attack when they had gone to arrest Raju Tiwari, an alleged criminal.
