Call for proactive officials

Dumka, Jan. 27: Santhal Pargana commissioner Surendra Singh Meena unfurled the Tricolour during Republic Day celebrations in Dumka yesterday, advocating a proactive approach by officials to address inequality in distribution of resources which he identified as the root of violence.

In only the second instance of a divisional commissioner doing the honours in Dumka in the absence of a chief minister, Meena said, “We are used to patting our own back by simply launching development schemes but often fail to ensure they really make any difference to the beneficiaries.”

He also expressed reservations about the state of affairs in local bodies, including the civic and rural. “Rural bodies must have their say in finalising development schemes, for they have been democratically formed and represent people.”

Meena said the basic tenets of the Constitution envisaged strict implementation of civic rights to safeguard the democratic set-up. “One must also be mindful of the equal privileges of all as guaranteed by the Constitution,” he opined.

He also felicitated 30 freedom fighters on Friday.
