Troops in Timbuktu
Jan. 27 (Reuters): French and Malian troops were today restoring government control over Timbuktu, the latest gain in a fast-moving French-led offensive against al Qaida-allied fighters occupying northern Mali.
The rebels have pulled back northwards to avoid relentless French air strikes that have destroyed their bases. Kidal town still remains in rebel hands.
Lahore (PTI): Pakistan’s National Assembly will be dissolved before March 16 and the date for the next general election will be announced in the coming 10 days, information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Sunday. The election will be held within 90 days of the dissolution.
Paris (Reuters): France’s health regulator has opened an inquiry into acne drug Diane-35, also used as a contraceptive, after four deaths linked to it in the past 25 years. The deaths were because of thrombosis linked to the use of Diane-35.
London (PTI): Scientists have launched efforts to preserve Aramaic, an ancient language related to both Hebrew and Arabic, believed to have been spoken by Jesus Christ and his disciples more than 2,000 years ago.
