Medals for IPS officers

Bhubaneswar: IPS officers S.K. Upadhyay and Arun Kumar Ray are among 18 policemen from Odisha who have been selected for the President’s medal for distinguished and meritorious service. padhyay and Ray will receive the medals from Odisha governor M.C. Bhandare during a special programme here on Saturday.

Political meet

Bhubaneswar: The Empowered Committee of Finance Ministers of various states will discuss the Centre’s non-payment of compensation because of loss following reduction in central sales tax rate at the two-day meet scheduled to be held here from January 28. Finance minister Prasanna Acharya said the state’s accumulated loss stands at Rs 1,500 crore.

Berhampur: Students of Sashi Bhusan Rath Government Women’s College here on Friday staged protests against the decision of the district administration not to allow the NCC contingent of the institution to take part in the Republic Day parade. he cadets said they were unable to attend the selection parade on January 19 for unstated reasons.

Bhubaneswar: Muslims across the state observed Prophet Mohammed’s birth anniversary on Friday by holding special prayers, discourses and tazia processions. Hundreds of Muslims took part in the celebrations in Bhubaneswar, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jatni and Soro.

Bhubaneswar: Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will attend the national-level Gandhian summit to be held from January 29 in Cuttack on the occasion of 66th martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi. The two-day summit will be organised by Gandhi Global Family, Odisha branch.

Surf festival

Konark: The second edition of India Surf Festival began on Friday at the scenic coast of Ramchandi beach. The three-day festival has been organised by Rangers Adventure Foundation in collaboration with the state tourism department. n the inaugural day, 32 surfers of different age groups and countries such as Argentina, Italy, Spain, USA and India took part in the festival.

Punishment

Bhubaneswar: A Berhampur court on Friday awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to a youth in connection with a rape incident. The youth had raped a minor in April last year and had later been arrested by the police.
