Carbine in CPM leader home

Burdwan, Jan. 25: A CPM leader in Burdwan was today arrested in connection with the murder of two Trinamul workers last year and a carbine was seized from him, police said.

District superintendent of police S.M.H. Meerza said a 9mm pistol and 37 rounds of ammunition were also found during the raid on Kausar Ali’s home in Khandagosh.

Ali, a local committee member, was arrested from his house along with an aide, Alauddin Kazi. Both have been remanded in seven days’ police custody.

A police officer said: “The carbine appears to be genuine. We will send it to experts in Calcutta.”

Carbines are generally issued to SPG and NSG personnel and commandos trained to fight terrorists and provide security to VIPs.

Ali, the police said, had been evading arrest for the past four months after he was accused of murdering two Trinamul workers in strife-torn Khandagosh.
