Flower show

The enclosure for roses was colourful with red, maroon, white, yellow blooms. The rows on both sides of the field were adorned with pompom and button varieties of chrysanthemums. Anabil’s seventh annual flower show at Bechpukur Math in Olabibitala, held from January 10 to 13 was a thing of beauty. This year’s show had 62 participants coming from different parts of Howrah and some entries from Midnapore and North 24 Parganas.

Prizes were aplenty as there were 75 competitive segments. Flowers, fruits, seasonal plants, foliage, succulents, orchids and bonsai were some of the sections that drew crowds. Bhabatarini Nursery from Baksara was the overall winner of the competition with entries in the rose, foliage, seasonal flowers and fruits and vegetables sections.

Apart from the main competition, another competition was held for school students where a group of students up to Class XII could take part with three tubs. Local women took part in flower arrangement. “We have introduced these segments to increase women’s participation in our competitions,” said Biswanath Sikdar, the secretary of Anabil. The flower show was accompanied by cultural programmes in the evenings. Visitors could also browse through exhibitions on Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda on display at the show.
