Sandhya Hari had pushed her bed from the middle of the room towards the rear wall so that her three-year-old son would not fall off it while sleeping.
That one change saved as many as five lives on Wednesday night when a Mahindra Bolero lost control while negotiating a slope at Swabhumi and plunged 40feet into the Haris’ shanty at Sebak Nagar, a slum off the Bypass that has 67 dwelling units.
The snout of the vehicle pierced the floor right in front of the bed and the rear rested on the wall, making almost a right-angle triangle. All five — Sandhya and husband Sanjay, and the couple’s three children — were on the bed that got sandwiched between the bonnet and the rear wall of the shanty.
“Had the bed been in its earlier position, all five of us would have been smashed under the vehicle,” said Sandhya, in between diagnostic tests at a Bypass hospital.
