Spurious liquor kills two

Jorhat, Jan. 23: Two persons died today while two were hospitalised after drinking spurious liquor at Chabua in Dibrugarh district.

The two victims were identified as Rabi Kumar Deep, 60, and Lakhinder Nag, 50, of Durania Line of Dinjoi Chariali at Chabua in the district.

The two undergoing treatment at nearby Balijan tea estate are Kanta Gowala and Phoolmati Kisan, a woman.

Sources said all the four were having country-made hooch at the house of one of the victimís relatives at of Dinjoi Chariali on Monday. They fell ill and last night their condition deteriorated and all were brought to the hospital.

Two died in the wee hours today and their bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

The excise staff are investigating the case and has lodged a complaint with the police, who are questioning the relative in whose house the liquor was consumed.

Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Aruna Rajoria told The Telegraph that from preliminary investigation it was found that the four consumed the liquor, which was made at the house of one of the victims. She said the excise and police departments have been asked to carry out drives on illicit liquor manufacturing units and illegal liquor shops.

Commissioner (Upper Assam division) S.I. Hussain said consumption of illicit was a social menace in tea garden areas, which apart from administrative action, needs an awareness drive against illicit liquor.

Hussain said he has directed the deputy commissioners of the Upper Assam districts to depute senior district administration officials to supervise the crackdown on illicit-liquor producing units and illegal shops selling the same.
