Grapplers chosen for state meet

After cricket and hockey, wrestling seems to have caught the fancy of the residents of state capital Ranchi.

The Ranchi District Wrestling Association, on behalf of the state arts, culture and sports department, on Wednesday organised a daylong district level competition to select 24 wrestlers for the state-level Telanga Kharia Trophy Wrestling Competition 2012-13. The event is scheduled to take place in the state capital sometime in mid February.

According to officials, more than 100 wrestlers from various parts of the state, competed in Wednesday’s event at Morabadi-based Birsa Munda Stadium in as many as eight different weight categories.

The event, which started around 10.30am, went on till late into the day before the selectors zeroed down to 24 wrestlers (16 men and eight women) in various weight and style categories, all of who would now get a chance to pit their skills at the district level.

Speaking to The Telegraph on Wednesday, international coach (wrestling) of National Institute of Sports Bhola Nath Singh said they had selected talents who performed well at the district meet and expected to come up good at the state-level.

“The competition on Wednesday was good. All the participants displayed great strength, skill and stamina while competing in the free and Greco-Roman categories,” Nath said.
