Left Front candidates file papers

Agartala, Jan. 22: A large number of leading Left Front candidates, including senior cabinet ministers, filed their nomination papers today.

Though the election department here failed to give the final nomination profile of the state as it was still awaiting confirmation from far-flung subdivisions, minister for higher education and information Anil Sarkar, who has won eight successive Assembly polls, filed his papers.

Similarly, minister for forest, rural development and industry Jiten Chowdhury and MLA Rita Kar Mazumder filed their nomination papers at Sabroom subdivisional headquarters.

Senior CPM legislators Pabitra Kar and Manoranjan Debbarma have filed papers in the office of the SDM (Jirania) today, said official sources in the election department.

Rajkumar Chowdhury from Surjyamani Nagar constituency and Samar Das of the RSP from Badharghat (SC-reserve) also filed papers.

CPM office secretary Haripada Das said filing of nomination papers by Left Front candidates would be over on January 24.

Security forces land: Altogether 44 companies of paramilitary forces have arrived in Tripura on the instructions of the Union home ministry. Their presence will be bolstered by around 10,000 policemen, 12 battalions of Tripura State Rifles and additional forces that will come on the eve of the Assembly polls.
